Product Description

Following on from The Highland Furies, in which she traced the regiment's history from the inception to the late Victorian era, Victoria Schofield tells the story of The Black Watch in the twentieth and Twenty- first centuries, she tracks its fortunes through the second South African War, two World Wars, the Korean War, The Mau Mau uprising, 'the troubles' in Northern Ireland and the war in Iraq - up to the Black Watch's merger with the five other regiments to form the Royal Regiment of Scotland in 2006.

Drawing on diaries, letters and memoirs, but also on interviews with living veterans from 1939 onwards, Victoria Schofield weaves the multiple strands of the story into an epic narrative of a heroic body of officers and men over a century of warfare. In her sure hands, the story of The Black Watch is no arid recitation of campaigns, dates and battle honours, but a richly rewarding account of the fortunes of war of a remarkable institution - a modern day chanson de geste celebrating the deeds of a regiment that has played a distinguished role in British, and World, history.

  1. Value For Money

Posted by Lawrence (Pat) WATMORE on 21st Jul 2017

Having served with the 2nd Battalion The Blackwatch (RHR) in Hong Kong, Colchester and Ballykinler, Co Down, N.Ireland (including 3 tours of Belfast) as WOII SQMS (ACC) - I bought the book to broaden my knowledge and understanding of Scotland's finest regiment.
Obviously having received the book only last week I've not had sufficient time to read the 828 pages, however what I have read has been educational and at the same time inspirational.
The author Victoria Schofield has produced a brilliant tome and she fully deserves the plaudits and compliments that the book must have earned her.
Truly a historical record of great value and I personally am delighted with the book and have no reservations in recommending it as an important chronological record of the regiment from the 19th century through to the 21st. Outstanding value for money.

  2. The ultimate book about The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment)

Because this book was the first that I received, I started reading this second volume about the history of the regiment before the first volume.
It is not only a very interesting book, but it is also nice reading even for a non native speaker! I am already looking forward to read the first volume The Highland Furies. High respect for the writer of these impressive books, Mrs. Victoria Schofield!
