HMS Dido was one of the ships sent to evacuate allied troops after the fall of Crete.  German bombers attacked the fleet and one bomb exploded in her canteen amongst the evacuated soldiers. This caused a fire which threatened the ship. Ordered by his Captain to flood the canteen, a midshipman could not give the command. A wounded sergeant, in the canteen, told him to relay the order. It was flooded and the men inside died, including 137 men from The Black Watch. As the ship arrived in Alexandria, a Black Watch piper on the Bridge played the Regiment's marching tunes, in homage to the men who died.
